Q&A

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
When working with a new client, I typically begin with background information, routines, and dietary information. Before we even get to training, there are other things to consider - like welfare and well-being of our dogs!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I mentored for a year and a half with a certified dog trainer, then began my own business while continually building on my knowledge through books, videos, seminars/webinars, and so on. I am always learning, especially from different dogs and people! I have over 1,000 hours of hands on experience so far and will eventually be certified in force free/harm free training once I’ve selected the correct certification and prepared for it fully.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started with walking dogs and dog sitting part time while working in social work. I started mentoring with a trainer and things took off from there!

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
All dogs, all ages, all breeds. The same applies to people!

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
My boy, Geert, is always a work in progress. We have been learning new behaviors to offset old inconsistencies in teaching before. We have been working on building confidence outside and in different environments. This is an every day and all the time deal, as is with most dogs!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Behaviors can be taught without using corrections and punishment. It takes patience, knowledge of body language and behavior, skill, and creativity. Listen to your intuition, if it doesn’t feel comfortable to you or sit right, then it may not be the method for you. Advocate for your dog.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Mostly, I’d like for clients to start switching their mindframe to “what is it I’d like to see my dog do?” And “why is my dog struggling?”, and “how can I help them cope in this situation?” Dogs are sentient beings and if we treat them as such and respect them as such, they end up wanting to listen to us and do things with us.
